  • The Outlet of the Qasbe Aqueduct (Qanat)

Over the course of centuries the outlet of the qanat has been displaced several times. About 10 centuries ago, the qanat water would travel beyond Gonabad boundary and through a stepwise process (entry of water into the tiny well and underground headrace and furnaces) reach 34 kilometers north of the current outlet into Houz-e Sorkh (the red pond) and probably Houzul-Habib. The old outlet of the qanat was located in 302 meters south of the current one, next to the old road from the town of Qasbe to Jouymand. Before displacing, the outlet had been a wide open-air raceway drawn a long way to the north which was further divided into several channels at the end. This had been, in fact, the outlet of two channels or headraces through which the qanat water ran. The two channels were made in order to ensure the water keeps flowing in either in case the other collapses or gets obstructed. Today the qanat outlet is at an altitude of 1100 meters in the southeast of current Gonabad, or in the south of a famous neighborhood known as Qasbe.
